Reinstate * wildcards
Reinstate * wildcards as they are safe to use, but do not allow any
other special characters such as ? or [].
Notably, ? would overlap with patterns, and [] might overlap with
future pattern extensions (alternative bracketing style), it's also
hard to explain.
